karei inaru

across indigenous cultures are creation stories involving sea turtles. from the ojibwe and mohawk stories of nanabozho or sky woman being central in the formation of turtle island, to the taíno story of deminan and karei inaru (turtle woman), we see turtles being a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. every continent has its own legends and beliefs attached to sea turtles. they represent the water element, the sacred, protection, strength, endurance, longevity, and fertility. turtles have also long been a symbol of the divine feminine/ goddess. bearing thirteen spaces on their shells, they have been used as calendars as they fall in alignment with the thirteen cycles of of the moon and womb experienced each year
